Linux Workshop 2015
It is a 6 hrs workshop conducted with the aim of providing the students an insight of the open source operating system. It is a one day workshop where students are taught each and every thing right from installation of the latest version of Ubuntu to all basic Linux commands, GUI Exploration, Terminal, Software Installation, Programming in Linux and administration

1. Introduction to Linux 30 Mins
a. Why to use Linux?
b. Opportunities, properties, advantages of Linux.
c. Free and open source softwares.
c. Commercial OS vs. Linux.

2. Installation of Linux based Operating System 01.30 Hr.
a. Ubuntu 14.10 will be used for installation
b. Boot sequence
c. File system, Ubuntu directory structure
d. Installation of Ubuntu alongside Windows 7.

3. Exploring GUI of Ubuntu 01 hr
a. Different applications like VLC, Firefox, Libre Office
b. Alternate open source applications on Linux.
c. Different desktops like Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon, Xfce etc.
b. Nautilus v/s Windows Explorer
c. WINE emulator for Windows applications.

4. Software Installation in Linux 01 Hr.
a. Compression and Decompression using TAR compression technique.
b. Installation with apt-get install / update / upgrade.
c. .deb package installation.
d. Synaptic package manager.

5. Programming 30 min.
a. Debugging a C program using gdb and ddd.
b. Namespaces and C++ program compilation using g++
c. Java program compilation and execution.

a. The startup and shutdown scripts in /etc/rc.d
b. Linux administration commands
c. Remote desktop access using vnc, ssh protocols.
c. Instablishing telnet connection and using its terminal
d. Windows desktop access using rdp.
e. Removable storage devices disabling in Linux.
